I’ve often talked about the benefits of isolated functional genioplasty. The easiest to recognize is the aesthetic benefit in profile. The chin is less long, less receding (retrusive) and it allows the lips to close without muscular contraction of the chin muscle causing additional flattening. Lips that close together without muscular contraction is called lip competence.
Another advantage that I have well documented in my article “Functional geniploasty in growing patient\/G\u00e9nioplastie fonctionnelle chez le patient en croissance. Angle Ortho 2015” is bone remodeling.
Observe the amount of bone apposition on the osteosynthesis metal ligatures and the thickening of the symphysis when viewed in sagittal section.
This patient had undergone orthodontic treatment by another practitioner when she was a teenager. She liked her teeth, but didn’t like her profile.
I met her in January 2019 when she came to see me to repair a retainer wire. I broached the subject of her “puckered and receding” chin and explained what a genio could do.
I saw her again yesterday, 38 weeks after her genioplasty. She was really happy.
Conclusion: <\/strong>A Class I canine relationship and a 2 mm overbite and overjet should not be the only objective of orthodontic treatment. A balanced height of the facial thirds is part of what Dr. David Saver calls “macro-esthetics.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
