Palatal constriction causing a posterior crossbite is often associated with an anterior open bite.
Correcting the transverse relationship during a 1st expansion phase helps to correct the problem of the height of the anterior occlusal plane in relation to the posterior plane. Generally speaking, the space created by the transverse gain levels out the upper spee curve.
This makes it possible to perform a unisegmental Le Fort 1 osteotomy (without partitioning), thereby reducing the risk of certain complications.
