This young patient, aged 7 years 10 months, has a thumb-sucking habit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Slide 1.
<\/strong>We observe 2 classic consequences of non-nutritive sucking habits: 1- Palatal constriction; 2- Anterior hernia.
The use of a Hyrax-type expansion appliance corrected the problem of maxillary width, but was not sufficient to break the bad sucking habit, hence the persistence of the anterior open bite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Slide 2:
<\/strong>A thumb trap was fitted. The 5-month follow-up photo shows the self-eruption of the incisors and the “self-closure” of the anterior hollowness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Slide 3:
<\/strong>This thumb trap was developed by a colleague, Dr. James Noble.
The effectiveness of this device was immediate, in that this young patient was no longer comfortable putting her thumb in her mouth.
